So, the people over at Pantone have decided that the new color for 2015 will be Marsala. Well, to be honest it’s not really the people over at Pantone that forecast the color trend for the upcoming year, but rather it’s a secret group of designers from around the world who are formed into a committee. This committee of design colorists meets secretly twice a year to debate color related trends and theories, pitch each other their ideas on color and its impact and then to ultimately decide which color will receive all the glory in the upcoming year.
So, back to the color Marsala. Here’s what Pantone has to say about it, “Much like the fortified wine that gives Marsala its name, this tasteful hue embodies the satisfying richness of a fulfilling meal while its grounding red-brown roots emanate a sophisticated, natural earthiness. ”
As I look at the color Marsala, I see it as a rich, deep and earthy red, that will probably have more of an impact on the fashion world than on the print and digital world. I see it as a color for makeup and apparel, a color for an accented pillow on a couch or a chair against a wall. It does have a luxurious and regal feel to it that will work well as an accent but would probably be too overwhelming to stand as the over all dominating color. While the color remains eye-catching and expressive, as all the colors that belong to the red family, it is not as bright or overwhelming as the traditional reds that we are used to seeing. There’s no doubt everyone has been waiting for the announcement and there’s no doubt that we will all be seeing it in the coming months.
Now, I wonder what the color committee will be looking at next and where they’ll be meeting up…
