For those of us outside the graphic design world, we know very little about AIGA. Let’s bring you up to speed.

What does AIGA stand for?
It’s really quite simple – AIGA is the American Institute of Graphic Arts.

What does AIGA do?
Founded in 1914, AIGA is celebrating their centennial year. It remains the oldest and largest professional membership organization for design. AIGA carries out their mission by connecting practitioners and members through local and national events. These events:

  • Advocate for a greater understanding of the value of designers and design across all venues and outlets
  • Enhance professional development through various conferences and workshops
  • Define global standards and ethical practices to please the widest audience
  • Inspire designers and the public through fellow members and beyond
  • Establish criteria for design education that meets the needs of the professional world
  • Celebrate and enhance the value of design by creating meaningful conversations
  • Mobilize a global design movement

What is AIGA’s mission?
According to AIGA’s website, “AIGA advances design as a professional craft, strategic advantage and vital cultural force. As the largest community of design advocates, we bring together practitioners, enthusiasts and patrons to amplify the voice of design and create the vision for a collective future. We define global standards and ethical practices, guide design education, inspire designers and the public, enhance professional development, and make powerful tools and resources accessible to all.”

Would I recognize anything they’ve done?
The answer is most likely yes! If you’ve ever been in an airport or a large international event, you’ve probably seen their Symbol Signs indicating where the bathrooms, telephone, first aid, stairs and the likes are located. They were produced through collaboration with the Department of Transportation to convey a universal message no matter what language an individual spoke.
